Samburu National Reserve

A Wildlife Haven Like No Other

Samburu National Reserve, located in northern Kenya along the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River, is a unique and rugged safari destination known for its arid landscapes, diverse wildlife, and cultural experiences. The reserve spans about 165 square kilometers and offers a more secluded, off-the-beaten-path safari experience compared to other Kenyan parks. Its semi-desert environment supports rare species known as the “Samburu Special Five,” which include the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx, species that are not commonly found in other reserves.

The Ewaso Ng’iro River, which cuts through the reserve, is a lifeline for the wildlife, attracting large numbers of elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs, making it an excellent spot for game viewing, particularly during the dry season. Bird enthusiasts will also find Samburu a haven, with over 450 species of birds recorded. Cultural interactions with the semi-nomadic Samburu people offer travelers the chance to learn about their rich traditions, colorful attire, and pastoral lifestyle, adding a deeper cultural dimension to the safari experience. Whether through game drives along the river, guided nature walks, or cultural village visits, Samburu National Reserve provides a truly distinctive and intimate African safari experience in a breathtakingly remote setting.
